Ron and Joyce have been married for 47 years. They have three children and 19 grandchildren. Ron’s work history includes serving as a youth pastor, owner and operator of a carpet service, and 22 years as a staff member for IBLP. During his time with the institute he worked as an overhead operator for the basic seminar, facilities worker at the Northwoods Conference center, pastor of a Bible church, facilities director for the Oak Brook facility, involvement in the Russia and Indianapolis programs, and founder of the ALERT program. Since leaving the ALERT program in 2003 he and Joyce started Whetstone Ministries, a program that serves the needs of families and in addition he completed his undergraduate work and completed two master’s degrees. In 2006 he joined the staff of Washington Regional Medical Center and eventually became the director of the chaplain ministry. In August of 2018 he resigned his position to give more time to the Whetstone ministry.

John Tanner joined the ALERT staff in 1994, just a few short months after its inception. Before working with ALERT, Colonel Tanner worked for AT&T for seventeen years and spent six years in the Army Reserves 94th General Hospital. During that time, he also served as a youth director for seven years and taught character and Biblical principles in the public schools of Moscow, Russia for nine months. In ALERT’s early days, Colonel Tanner developed the Emergency Response Training phase and taught Search and Rescue. He has taken part in almost 100 SAR missions to date, including the Space Shuttle Columbia recovery, as well as more than 40 disaster relief deployments. He served as the Director of the International ALERT Academy from 2002 through 2016. From 2016 to the present, John has been on the staff of U.S. Congressman Louie Gohmert as District Field Representative. Colonel Tanner and his wife Janet have been married for over forty-six years.
