ALERT Update | August 2, 2022

SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving is the scheduled training for the next two weeks in Unit 66’s 2nd Phase. Over the next two weeks, the men will go from no diving skills to performing technical searches for objects as small as a coin—in 30 feet of water with no visibility! Do we do SCUBA training because it’s cool? Yes. Do we do it because it’s a skill guys can use later on? Yes. But the main reason we value SCUBA training at ALERT is because of the unique way it stretches the men. The unfamiliar environment pushes them past their comfort zone. It provides stressful situations in a safe setting with skilled instructors to help the students grow. Learning to function in one unfamiliar environment improves the men’s ability to adapt to others they find themselves in. SCUBA training prepares the men to face life’s pressures with a clear head, face hardship, and grow stronger through it.
